Tired of bad food at your market? Vote with your dollars!

January 31, 2012

Vote with your dollars!

Paleo, vote with your dollars, fork, eat, nutrition, chatham, holistic, wellness, personal training, trainer, fitness, nj, new jersey

The reason there are so many “fast foods”, chips, sweats, and terrible cooking oils like canola (Rapeseed oil) in your processed market food is because you keep buying it.  Would McDonalds continue to open up new places if they didn’t have customers? I always say, “vote with your dollars”.  That’s our only true democratic structure in this country.  If you spend your money on healthy quality foods, the price of that food stays low and consistent.  The Costco’s and big box stores are producing such cheap food that real organic and pasture raised foods seem overwhelming.  To that argument, I always say, “pay the farmer or pay the doctor”.  Not investing in your body and health will always lead you towards disease.  Disease costs much more money than any true organic food, grass fed meats or wild fish.  The average heart surgery is between $50-100,000.  Which would you want to spend your money on?  This falls right in line with a famous quote “most people are dead by the age of 35, but their bodies keep walking around for another 30-40 years”. Know anyone like this?  Most people that I see walking around Livingston, Summit, and other local areas of NJ are living this exact way and seem confused by their sudden illness or disease.  Disease is simply a wake up call to start paying attention to your body instead of that new car or house that you are working so hard to pay for to impress people you could care less about.

Why do airlines say, “be sure to put on your oxygen mask before assisting others”?

January 27, 2012

If you don’t take care of yourself, how are you going to take care of others?

Be sure to place your mask on before assiting others, paleo, diet, nutrition, weight, loss, chatham, Livingston, Summit, madison, Millburn, short, hills, bad, training, trainer, personal, pain management, exercise, holistic, wellness, network, boot, camp, fitness, nj, new jersey, workout, training, personal, training, personal trainer, personal training, trainer, kettlebell, intense, classes, specific, jump, rope, balance, agility, medicine, ball, sweat, mobility, stability, core, strength, aerobic, anaerobic, intensity, Chek, Practitioner, holistic

If you don’t take care of yourself, how are you going to take care of others?  Parents who feed their children cereal and processed sugar water (carton milk) for breakfast each morning would have a DYFS agent sent to their house if I had anything to do it.  Children learn from their parents all their behaviors and traits, including their diet and exercise habits.  When you show your child that it is “normal” to eat cake and cookies for breakfast or any meal for that matter, you child grows up thinking that it is “normal” and keeps on repeating the insanity for all their life.  Some form of Dis-ease usually steps in after a while and gets you to stop and think of what you may be doing wrong.  Think of your dis-ease as a huge warning light on your car’s dashboard.  You don’t simply place a piece of tape over the light to mask it right? You get to the root cause of why the light went on in the first place.  Getting the facts on why your body is dis-functioning takes a real health sleuth to figure it out.  If you are only looking at the warning light (symptom) you are missing the entire human organism.  We always say, “don’t treat the disease that has the patient, but rather coach the patient who has the disease”. Sometimes it’s as simple as slowing down enough to figure out you are missing one of the 4 doctors in your life.

New Year’s Resolutions For Health and Fitness

January 24, 2012 2 Comments

Goal Setting for New Years

Once you realize you must act on your New Year’s resolution, you will be bombarded by all the gimmicks out there regarding the best way to get into shape.  Holistic Wellness Network offers NO Gimmicks! If you are serious about your health and your temple, you  will realize that there is a single way to get there and that’s simply eating according to your metabolic type and doing the correct exercise for your needs (Not what Shape magazine or Oprah says).  We start everyone off the same way no matter what time of year it is.  We do a full assessment, metabolic typing, and program you according to your end goals.

Goal setting is the most important task. If you don’t know what you realistically want, how will you know when you get there?  Let us advise you on how long it will realistically take to get to your goals and don’t rush the results.  It has taken you most of your life to get in the shape you are currently in, so asking for 6 months to 1 year of your life to correct all your imbalances is not asking a lot.  Our methods are proven to work over and over again as long as you are willing to follow them.  If you are not following the prescribed regimen anyone is prescribing for you, then don’t expect any of the results.  Stop chasing your own tail and get started with real experts in nutrition, corrective exercise, posturology and realistic periodization (the art of choosing the correct intensity, tempo, repetition, load, speed, and power).

Who do I go see when I’m not feeling well?

January 16, 2012

My fellow Chek Practitioners of course!

I always seek the assistance of my fellow Chek Practitioners when I’m feeling out of balance or need some body work done.  We are a family of over 10,000 strong throughout the world so there is always one nearby.  You can simply go on ChekConnect.com to “Find a Practitioner” link to locate one near you.

The specialty work we do is very unique and multidiciplanary.  We assess your breathing, diet, mental and emotional wellbeing, structure or postural health, muscular skeletal imbalances, organ stress, muscular strength, and sports performance.  So, you can seek out 10 doctors, therapists, and massage therapists or 1 highly trained Chek Practitioner.  We as humans are made up of a system of many systems. Treating the spot that hurts and ignoring the rest of the organism is silly in our opinion.  I used to use the example of a baseball player who kept throwing out his shoulder until someone (Chek Practitioner) did a full assessment and figured out that the player had a small pain on his big toe, which the player would avoid while throwing, that caused the improper throwing pattern in his shoulder.  We find the problem in your big toe…

Major Benefits of Coconut Oil

January 13, 2012

My favorite Coconut Oil Brand – Tropical Traditions

16-oz – Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil – 1 pint

Weight Loss:

Coconut oil is very useful in reducing weight. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight. It is also easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and digestive enzymes. Further, it increases the body metabolism by removing stress on pancreases, thereby burning out more energy and helping obese and overweight people reduce their weight. Hence, people living in tropical coastal areas, who eat coconut oil daily as their primary cooking oil, are normally not fat, obese or overweight.

Digestion:

Internal use of coconut oil occurs primarily as cooking oil. Coconut oil helps in improving the digestive system and thus prevents various stomach and digestion related problems including irritable bowel syndrome. The saturated fats present in coconut oil have anti microbial properties and help in dealing with various bacteria, fungi, parasites, etc., that cause indigestion. Coconut oil also helps in absorption of other nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Immunity:

Coconut oil is also good for the immune system. It strengthens the immune system as it contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid which have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which is claimed to help in dealing with viruses and bacteria causing diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. It helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia lamblia.

Healing and Infections:

When applied on infections, it forms a chemical layer which protects the infected body part from external dust, air, fungi, bacteria and virus. Coconut oil is most effective on bruises as it speeds up the healing process by repairing damaged tissues (every cell in our body contains cholesterol for this very reason!!!).

Heart Disease:

There is a misconception spread among many people that coconut oil is not good for the heart. This is because it contains a large quantity of saturated fats. However, coconut oil is beneficial for the heart. It contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps in preventing various heart problems including high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. The saturated fats present in coconut oil are not harmful as it happens in case of other vegetable oils. It does not lead to increase in LDL levels. It also reduces the incidence of injury in arteries and therefore helps in preventing atherosclerosis. Conventionally farmed saturated fat can be very inflamatory, but grass fed meat sources have NEVER been shown to cause any aterial inflamation.  Coconut oil is the closest you can get to the fat in breast milk.  As humans, we are designed to consume only two fluids, water and breast milk! Not crazy blue thunder gatorade sports drinks or rocket speed red bull…

Hair Care:

Coconut oil is one of the best natural nutrition for hair. It helps in healthy growth of hair providing them a shiny complexion. Regular massage of the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is free of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs, even if your scalp is dry. Coconut oil is extensively used in the Indian sub-continent for hair care. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. It is therefore used as hair care oil and used in manufacturing various conditioners, and dandruff relief creams. Coconut oil is normally applied topically for hair care.

Skin Care:

Coconut oil is excellent massage oil for the skin as well. It acts as an effective moisturizer on all types of skins including dry skin. The benefit of coconut oil on the skin is comparable to that of mineral oil. Further, unlike mineral oil, there is no chance of having any adverse side effects on the skin with the application of coconut oil. Coconut oil therefore is a safe solution for preventing dryness and flaking of skin. It also delays wrinkles, and sagging of skin which normally become prominent with age. Coconut oil also helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. Therefore coconut oil forms the basic ingredient of various body care products such as soaps, lotions, creams, etc., used for skin care. Coconut oil also helps in preventing premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its antioxidant properties.

Infections: Coconut oil is very effective against a variety of infections due to its antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties.  Coconut oil kills viruses that cause influenza, measles, hepatitis, herpes, SARS, etc. It also kills bacteria that cause ulcers, throat infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and gonorrhea, etc. Coconut oil is also effective on fungi and yeast that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete’s foot, thrush, diaper rash, etc.

Other:

Liver: The presence of medium chain triglycerides and fatty acids helps in preventing liver diseases as they substances are easily converted into energy when they reach the liver, thus reducing work load on the liver and also preventing accumulation of fat.

Kidney: Coconut oil helps in preventing kidney and gall bladder diseases. It also helps in dissolving kidney stones.

Pancreatitis: Coconut oil is also believed to be useful in treating pancreatitis.

Stress Relief: Coconut oil is very soothing and hence it helps in removing stress. Applying coconut oil to the head followed with a gentle massage helps in removing mental fatigue.

Diabetes: Coconut oil helps in controlling blood sugar, and improves the secretion of insulin. It also helps in effective utilization of blood glucose, thereby preventing and treating diabetes.

Bones: As mentioned earlier, coconut oil improves the ability of our body to absorb important minerals.  These include calcium and magnesium which are necessary for development of bones. Thus coconut oil is very useful to women who are prone to osteoporosis after middle age.

Dental Care: Calcium is an important element present in teeth. Since coconut oil facilitates absorption of calcium by the body, it helps in getting strong teeth. Coconut oil also stops tooth decay.

HIV and Cancer: It is believed that coconut oil plays an instrumental role in reducing viral susceptibility of HIV and cancer patients. Preliminary research has shown indications of the effect of coconut oil on reducing the viral load of HIV patients.

Finally, coconut oil is often preferred by athletes and body builders and by those who are dieting. The reason behind this being that coconut oil contains lesser calories than other oils, its fat content is easily converted into energy and it does not lead to accumulation of fat in the heart and arteries. Coconut oil helps in boosting energy and endurance, and enhances the performance of athletes.

Have you ever seen a depiction of a ship out to sea being powered by slave rowers getting whipped to row faster and harder? This is similar to what coffee does to the average tired, adrenal fatigued or thyroid fatigued individual.  The coffee keeps pushing you to produce more stress hormones to keep your rowers going, until your rowers just end up dying or breaking from over use.  What your body is really craving is rest!

There are 6 Foundational Principals of Optimal Health that we promote at Holistic Wellness Network:

  1. Breathing
  2. Thoughts
  3. Exercise
  4. Nutrition
  5. Water
  6. Sleep

If you can first identify where the problem is, you now have a road map of what needs to be done.  Are you getting to bed too late? Well, do the opposite! Get to bed by 9:30/10pm.  Watch all your fatigue wash away within a couple of days.  Have stinking thinking? Start incorporating more happy thoughts! Eating the Standard American Diet (SAD)? Get some real food in your belly! This is not hard people.  You just need to get rid of your television for a month and you will not be bombarded by all the advertising of drugs and fast food.

Why are there no diseased, fat, or unhealthy wild animals?

January 2, 2012

Indigenous people who have been eating the same way for 1,000’s of years and wild animals both don’t know what disease is

paleo, diet, nutrition, weight, loss, chatham, Livingston, Summit, madison, Millburn, short, hills, bad, training, trainer, personal, pain management, exercise, holistic, wellness, network, boot, camp, fitness, nj, new jersey, workout, training, personal, training, personal trainer, personal training, trainer, kettlebell, intense, classes, specific, jump, rope, balance, agility, medicine, ball, sweat, mobility, stability, core, strength, aerobic, anaerobic, intensity, Chek, Practitioner, holistic

When was the last time you heard about a deer having a heart attack?  When did you last hear about a bear being concerned about his HMO covering his cancer treatment? How about the last case of a duck concerned about their cholesterol? These things don’t exist because wild animals don’t have deep pockets to be plundered by the Sick Care System in this country.  Calling it a “health care system” is a big joke.  We have be driven away from our genetic predisposition to eat wild, grass fed, healthy animals, wild caught fish, and a large variety of vegetables and fruits.  We are now convinced we have some sort of pill deficiency.  Indigenous man/women have survived evolution up until the past 100 years.  What has changed?

  1. Food has become foreign to most families because of the invention of advertising.  They can sell you anything packaged in a pretty box and call it food, but is it really?  If you walk down the isle in most super markets you will find all the same ingredients in most boxed food.  Processed wheat, processed milk, processed salt, and processed sugar.  This has become America’s new 4-food groups.
  2. Stress has over come most people because we are being taught in school that if you don’t get straight A’s, you will never survive and will be poor.  So, kids as young as 7 (What I have been noticing) are coming into the studio for pain management and corrective exercise like they were in their late 40’s.  As we all know, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.  I take a quick look at the parents who bring in their kids and see older versions of the kids with the same exaggerated condition the kids have.
  3. Movement has become a chore to stay healthy instead of becoming a time to play.  I see a divided population of people who either don’t move at all or over exercise.  These are just the opposite ends of the same spectrum.  When there is no balance in your movement vs rest, you start to see problems.  People who don’t move enough see the lack of fluid in the body accumulating and becoming stale, whereas the over exerciser has a lack of fluid from wearing out their system.  It is not about calories in and calories out!!!! That comes from the food industry imposing their own belief system on their nutritionists (who actually still promote the food guide pyramid (designed by General Mills).  Show me the research studies that suggest it is better and I’ll show you who bought and paid for those results!
  4. People have forgotten how to be happy.  Being happy is a Verb.  What that means is that you must do things that make you happy.  I ask my clients, “what makes you happy” and their usual response is John, Mary or my friends… I always stop them and suggest to give me an action word like “walking, biking, hiking, Frisbee-ing, laughing, climbing, knitting, etc… These are things you can do all by yourself which relies on no one.  If people made you happy, what happens when they are no longer around?

Fluoridation of your community water supply, Summit NJ

December 27, 2011

Live in Union County NJ? You’ve are being medicated

“If you are putting a chemical in the water supply to do something to the actual water (chlorine), that may have a valid reason for taking place, but when you put a chemical in the water with reason to treat the human population (not the water) – you are medicating us without any informed consent”.  – David Getoff

This simply is illegal and yet it happens all over the country due to high paying lobbyists. Be informed about what goes into your body and especially don’t just accept things politicians say are safe.  That’s like listening to your doctor talk about nutrition.  Doctors study drugs and take zero to 2 hours of nutrition (at best!) in their entire medical education. Hopefully, this video will help educate you on water fluoridation at the viewpoint of someone who studies water fluoridation.
